Alligator Juniper is perhaps the most free form growth of all the species I have worked with. I love the magnificent swirls of this wood. I want to make floor lamps from this wood. I’m learning how to drill the holes for the wiring. I think they’re going to be great.
Named after its scaly, reptilian looking bark, Alligator Juniper is perhaps the most free form growth of all the species. Found mostly in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Northern Mexico, Alligator Junipers grow at elevations of 4000 – 6000 feet. This slow growing evergreen lives beyond 500 years. The growth rate is .6 inches per decade for young trees and slows to .4 inch per decade after the tree reaches 70 years of age.
